I love both stories but I agree that Of Mice and Men is easier to read and cuts to the chase much, much faster.
Plus, I don't feel sad when Romeo & Juliette die, whereas OM&M is absolutely gut-wrentching! Even my husband will never read it again because it's too painful!
Excellent story!

You need to think of it this way -- it has all the elements of the typical Disfunctional Family and Angst ...
Teens in Hormonal Rages
Bed Hopping
Sexual Promiscuity
Racism/Sexism
Forbidden Love
Hormonal Raging Teens partying the night away ..
Parental Worries about the out-of-control teens
Pedophilia (yep -- think of it this way -- Romeo was a High School Senior/Graduate preying on the very young Juliet -- an 8th Grader (approximately)) ...
And SUICIDE (including use of illicit substances)!
Hey, if Romeo and Juliet did elope and live .. well .. let's just say that we would see them on a "Who's the Daddy" as Romeo calls Juliet all those horrible names and denies he's the father with the next 3 or 4 or more girls that he became a 'sperm donor' to!

Oh, I don't think it's THAT boring. The plot, characterisation, dramatic tension... Good play.
Of course, that doesn't mean that I would go out of my way just to read it. OK, it's a little overrated, but it does have a message beneath it all. Or maybe I'm just looking into it too much.
But, to be honest, I'm more content with 'A Clockwork Orange' or 'Dracula'.

I can't compare it to OM&M, but it helps to develop Shakespeare ears to get the words. Once you get the archaic language it becomes fun.
