Yes, music is subjective. At least, music taste.
But there are many un-subjective criteria to judge a band on. Based on the evidence...(below), I'd say Rush is - Hands over fist - the best band.
Rush contains THE most celebrated rock drummer of all time. Neil is not just perfect, he has a unique style that is a joy to hear, and also enhances the songs.
...an awesome bass player...who also sings, plays sinth and foot peddals all at the same time!
The guitarist elevates from the norm of bar chords. He doesn't just follow the bass but adds artistry. Solos aren't just fast, but creative.
Lyrics. It's nice to have lyrics about something other than love, shakin' your thang, or doing various thing all night long. Each Rush song is about something different: what?, nobody knows for sure.
18 CD's !!!! 32 years. Worthy opponent Led Zeppelin made only 6 CD's.
Rush built a large(but quiet) fan base without help from the mainstream media. They don't care about publicity, and don't do TV.
No drug use or bad language.
3 hr. concerts. Never late.
They've gone through different stages musically, venturing into jazz, pop and metal.
Their albums have a unique personality:
Presto: the way we connect to things.
Roll the bones: Chance, luck
Power windows: Oriental sound
Signals: Technology, science. Cool synth, rockin' violin solo!!
Test for Echo: Communication
"Moving Pictures" made fans wonder if they were human.
Won best music DVD of 2004.

that question is subjective, I say yes they are.
ask someone who came of age during the Seattle
grunge influx and their answer is going to be a lot
different then mine. I became a Rush fan when their first
album was released back in 74-75 when I was 14. I've seen them 20+ times live. yet if I had to choose between seeing them or Robert Plant & Jimmy Page I would go with Page & Plant. go figure
