They are called Emoticons and are a way of typing an emotion or facial expression into an e-mail. Like when you say something as a joke and you want to make sure it is taken as a joke by the person reading it. You would add a smiley face like :-)
you can add other emotions like:
exclamation or oh :-o
wink ;-)
Sticking out tongue :-r

If you look sideways to the left, you will see that it is a smiley face. The = are the eyes and the ) is the mouth. Here are some more Emoticons:
