There are several reasons why Troy Smith didn't go higher in the draft. They include his measureables and past off the field behavior. As many others have noted, winning the Heisman indicates that you may be the best player in college that year. However, it says nothing to your ability to produce at the next level. The same can be said for High School All-Americans that don't excel in college.
Even though Troy Smith had an excellent Senior Year, he did not erase the doubts of every NFL personnel men that he could overcome his "shortcomings" when it comes to measurables like height, speed and arm strength. He was out of shape after hitting the "banquet tour." That didn't help his workouts at all. The protypical NFL QB is about Peyton Manning's height - 6'5". The offensive and defensive linemen in the NFL are taller and you have to be able to see over them. Being 5'10" makes that difficult.
Also, before this year (or maybe last year) there were several off the field incidents that raised flags among scouts. His solid Senior year erased most of those fears but as Michael Vick has shown, sometimes it's hard to make a complete change when you have so much of your old life still around you. The most important part of evaluating quarterbacks is an interview. Apparently, Smith did not impress as well as some of the other QBs did.
In the end, I think that Troy Smith can prove to be a good NFL quarterback. In the right system, he could develop into a Drew Brees (read: short) quarterback. It's up to him though. Baltimore is a great chance for him to learn from McNair and openly compete with Boller during training camp. That should be his goal - to beat out Boller for the backup position.

Ohio State Hiesman winer Troy Smith fell to the Fifth Round because of his size and inability to win the big game.
Smith may have a rocket arm, but he's 5'10 and might have trouble reading NFL Defensive Backs.
He also has some charchter issues. He had a run-in with the law a couple times last year with former Teammate and now Steelers Wide Reciever Santonio Holmes.
Also he's lost two Bowl games including the National Championchip game last year.
Smith is a player with the potential to be the steal of the draft is fifth-round choice Troy Smith. With no expectation of seeing the field for a while, the Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State has an excellent opportunity to polish his game under the tutelage of one of the league's best quarterback teachers, Brian Billick. Smith also can learn plenty by watching the old pro he could eventually replace, Steve McNair.

A Heisman Trophy is not necessarily an indicator of success in the NFL - look at past winners and see how their pro careers ended up - For example - Charlie Ward from Florida State won the Heisman and ended up with a mediocre career in the NBA. The scouts did not like the way Smith performed at the combines - his speed, accuracy and arm strength were much less impressive than several of the other QB's in the draft. Not to mention his choke job in the National Championship game.

Because he is 5"11" 230" QB. He isnt the prototype. One of my good friends is Eric Crouch and he won the Heisman and is a great athlete but he isnt a pro style QB. Just remember Gino Torretta won the Heisman when he played at Miami and he was a bust, the guy who got 2nd that year was Marshall Faulk who will probably be a first ballow hall of fame running back.

Well scouts don't always look at production as a college player. They look at their combines and workouts. A player can be very productive in college and not get drafted at all because of a poor performance at their pro day workouts or their combine just look at jason white former hiesmen winner he isn't even in the nfl anymore. Scouts were disappointed with him after he came in at 6'0 tall which they say is to short for a QB but look what drew brees did last year and he was only 6'0. But troy smith also ran a 4.72 forty which also disappointed a lot of people. But i think the biggest factor why he slipped so much was his performance in the national championship game. Troy Smith though will be a great quarterback though mark my words.

The main reason he didn't go early in the draft was because of his height. NFL QB's usually need to be taller. He is only like 5'10". That makes it tough for him to see over/around linemen to make the throws.
NFL Teams likely believed his winning the heisman was largely due to the system he played in and no team in the NFL runs that system. He wouldn't be expected to perform at the same level in a different, more structured system.
Heisman winners usually don't succeed very much in the NFL. If you look at the long list of trophy winners, you likely won't recognize most of the names.

Winning the Heisman means nothing to the pro teams. The Heisman winners frequently suck, as does Troy.

Sports don't work that way. It's like Reddick from Duke basketball. He was unstoppable in college, but now that he's in the pros he doesn't even play. Just because your really good in college doesn't mean you have the skills necessary for the pros. Troy Smith is a speed guy who can throw deep. Tough to deal with if your running a college D. He isn't fast compared to a pro linebacker though, and he can't out throw a pro safety either.

Troy Smith has to pass into the NFL Draft this 12 months because of the fact his college eligibility is comprehensive. he's a senior and consequently has no danger to return to varsity to play anymore. examine out the Mock Draftboards that are available to be certain his projected draft place.

Because he wasnt really that good. If u look at it, he was only picked as the Heisman because he was on Ohio State, the #1 ranked team at the time! He went 4-14 with 40 yards in the title game, what a heisman performance! HE SUCKS! MICHIGAN ALL THE WAY!
MGOBLUE!
