Communication, Honesty, and Respect, I think are three important keys to a successful marriage....You have to be honest, you have to always communiaciate with one another and you have to repect each other as a couple and as an individual.....Relationships are about two people sharing and comitting to one another as one.....

I usually go with four:
1) A long list of common interests; things you both enjoy doing TOGETHER as opposed to separate interests and separate groups of friends.
2) A lot of tolerance for each other's differences. As much as you share in common, you're still going to rub one another wrong from time to time. Be mature and deal with it. Separate the small $h!t from the serious stuff.
3) A sense of compromise; so that you can work out your problems with a minimum of emotional trauma. It's marital negotiation.
4) A sense of sympathy and forgiveness. You're both going to screw up on occasion. You need to be able to forgive, forget, and move on with the relationship.

#1 Honesty, you can't truly love someone without trust.
#2 Hard work, it takes hard work on both ends to make a successful marrige
#3 understanding, you have to know where your other half is coming from. You learn that through time, communication, and learning about who they are (books, friends, in-laws)

1. Communication- Be direct when issues arise that threaten your relationship.
2. Effort- Work to keep the love you feel for each other alive. It is worth it.
3. Respect- Never "fight dirty" (name calling).

Nobody is perfect and news flash neither are you. Learn to deal with each others failings fast and move on to the fun stuff in the marriage.
