I have been using Dewalt with out much trouble for a long time. They have quite a bit of power and hold a charge decently. I personally still prefer a cord just for the power.

Rigid tools have a really good warranty. It covers the battery as well as the tool itself. The tools themselves are great, plenty of power in the 18 volt series. I'd check into getting something with the newer Lithium Ion batteries if available. If you are wanting something cheaper, I've also had good luck with the Black and Decker Firestorm series. My drill is on it's second set of batteries now and still going strong. Obviously no great warranty on the batteries here. It really depends on what you are going to be using the tools for. Just odd jobs around the house or as a contractor or handyman. If you're going to be doing some serious work, then I wouldn't go with anything less than an 18 volt system. I'd also check the recharge time, some batteries and chargers take up to six hours and some take less than one hour.

I own probably 1/2 dozen brands each of various power tools, and "favorite" truly never entered my mind. Each are used, each deliver the service I want in my work, and each have similar capabilities.

Considering that most, within the same power ranges, etc. are all manufactured in similar ways, likely in the same country, I suspect "Branding" is designed to answer someones desire and experience with a particular name.
Example: For years people shopped no where else but Sears, for Craftsman tools,,, and at the time the warauntee was extreme to the point of keeping customers.

Perhaps that might be one of the things to look for among reliability, servicability, warauntee, tool design, features you like, accessories, etc. etc. etc.

DeWalt for instance is another tool manufacturer of a multiple NAME brands, and both are popular according to who likes what. I have Dewalt among others, and also know that within 5 or 10 miles of my shop or any job, there is a DeWalt service center. Rigid and Ryobi have come a long way.

Bosch, Millwaukee, Porter Cable, etc., are pricier and likely touted to be more powerful and long lasting. In the end it becomes a matter of preference through personal use,,,Hopefully,,, Not any advertising Hype.

I Prefer Makita For the motor and Dewalt for the battery. But with the new Lion Batteries who knows, And I Can't just replace everything for the sake of the new Battery technology.

My favorite is Makita, cost a little more than some other brands, but worth the extra cost.
