The famous explorers in the past are male like Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo, and they named their ship after their mother, wife or a special female figure in their family that later became a trend of naming a boat after women.

Not all boats are named after girls. I know of several in our harbor that are named after guys. EX; Leander- louie louie and pi-eyed pete. Oh yeah and victors vagabond. I also know of a few ships named after guys like Bismarck, Scharnhorst, Duke of York and Lord Nelson.

It's always been my supposition that since boats, planes, and at one time cars were owned and operated by men, they gave their craft a woman's name because they were either maintaining it all the time or cursing it for being contrary, balky, and irritating. In the old days, I imagine the sailors also felt they were being housed, nourished and kept safe by the ship, which is what a mother would do--hence, the feminine name.

They are all refered to as she, no matter what her name is. Like hurricanes used to all have female names before we all became PC, it referes to a womans wrath, as anything that has the reference of "she" or "her" has the capacity to kill you.Airplanes, boats, motorcycles, hurricanes, are good examples.
