Cervadil is a cervical ripening medication that is embedded into a tiny piece of mesh fabric at the end of a string. It is much smaller than a tampon. It is inserted into the vagina and placed up against the cervix. Just like a vaginal exam, but it might be a bit more uncomfortable because they have to place it way far up behind the cervix- not always easy to reach.
It stays in place for 12 hours and then is removed. Sometimes second doses are needed. At the hospital I work at, they have you come in to the hospital in the evening and put the Cervadil in, and you stay at the hospital until you deliver, they don't let you go home with Cervadil in place.
Cervadil makes the cervix soft and pliable so that it will be more favorable to a pitocin induction. A lot of times, moms will go into labor on their own while the Cervadil is in, the cause is not fully understood because Cervadil itself is not a labor-inducing medication, as I said, it's a cervical ripening agent. But generally, pitocin is then used after the cervix is ripe, soft and will be able to change and dilate with contractions.
I am curious as to why they are so eager to induce you before 40 weeks? Most physicians and midwives wait until 41 weeks or later, unless the baby is expected to be very large or there are other issues going on.

My ob tried to induce me 3 times. Each time with Cervadil, which I believe is what your talking about, and Pitocin, which they put in an i.v. My cervix was pretty stubborn, so I had to eventually have a c-section. But I had pregnancy induced hypertension. The ob.( sometimes a nurse) inserts it by your cervix. Its like a cold little piece of cardboard. I started getting small contractions from it after about 2 hours. Its connected to a long string also. So when you go to the bathroom, you have to pat. I didn't the first time, and it had to be reinserted.....good luck! And they kept it in for 12 hours. Also after 2 hours I was able to eat and drink.

It's some type of hormone that encourages dilation. It's usually pretty successful. Try walking around as much as you can. It will encourage the baby to move into the birth canal which also helps encourage dilation.
What you are feeling could just be very strong braxton hix, which I found to be quite uncomfortable with my second child and was having them regularly (every 3-4 minutes) for several days before my water broke.
I had to have an I.V. with pitocin with my first child which caused some very strong contractions but labor was quick.
Good luck to you. Even if you do end up with a C-Section the important thing to remember is the end result, no mater the birthing process, is a beautiful healthy baby!

I dont remember what it is called, but I had to be induced with my son (at 42 weeks- uugghh lol) and they were talking about using that, but instead decided to try breaking my water first and seeing if that had any effect.
Luckily for me- my contractions kicked up within 5 minutes of my water breaking!

So i advance into brought about with the two. yet my third hard paintings all started on this is very own with my water breaking. IT advance into an exceedingly exciting experience that i does no longer commerce for something. so as somebody who has completed it the two techniques, i could propose you in basic terms enable nature take this is direction and enable your physique paintings as this is meant to. it's going to be something you will on no account ignore. i'm no longer speaking regarding the discomfort. :)

I have never been induced, but if you have any questions about what is going to happen to you...call the hospital up and ask them. I'm sure they'll tell you!
