A bird, if I may choose the type of bird. I would be the kind of bird with both eyes facing forward - a predator. Not because I want to kill things, rather so I wouldn't live in a constant state of fear. Other birds seem awfully skittish. I saw a hawk circling my Mother's place yesterday and watched the chickens and geese take cover. The little ones sensed the fear in the adults.
I would rather be the hawk and not live in fear.
As for why a bird and not a tree - a tree lives its whole life in one spot. Yes, redwoods are majestic and live ALOT longer than birds, but they get the same old scene year after year. Birds can soar and roam. If they don't like an area, they move on. Trees do not have that luxury.

I'll break the mold on this one. Bird is the easy answer because of their mobility. But I wouldn't want to have to fly miles and miles every time the weather changed. I'm not that fickle. I'd say tree.
Philosophically, I'd be a tree because they're more interesting. How exactly does a trees branches grow in just the way that they do? The tree is more in tune with its surroundings, yearning for the warmth of the sun - the same way in which we yearn for the warmth of other people. And even if someone came along and chopped down my great kapok tree, I'd know it would be to put me to good use. I'd keep your walls standing tall, keeping your heat inside and protect you from the world around you. I'd hold up your roofs and keep you dry in the rain. And if you needed, you could sacrifice me to stay warm or to cook food for your own survival.
Oh, and its easier being green - I don't have to stomach eating worms :)

If I were a tree I would see how delighted children play in my shade. I would provide a home to many birds and insects who seek my protection. I would grow strong and tall, and I would shade the roof of the house, saving the people who planted me much money on air conditioning. I would pose beautifully and gracefully for artists who wanted to paint me. I would be so lucky to drink deeply from the earth, bend gracefully in the wind, and welcome my friends home when they return from their flights.
If I was a bird, I would land on the branches of a tree I love and sing sweetly for the tree to enjoy. I would build a nest to raise my children in the safety of my tree. In the winter, I would fly to a warmer location. On my way, I would fly through so many wonderful places. I would see people from all over the world, and see the land, plants, animals and waters of the world. As I fly I would meet all my friends from the other places they fly from, and make new friends, too. Although I am a simple, ordinary bird, I would love to enjoy the fancy, colorful birds I see from all over the world. I would be so lucky to move freely, raise my children on the waves of the wind, and come to my tree at the end of my travels.
Indeed, how would I choose? Strength or freedom, the joy of a permanent place, or the beauty of the skies, seeing the joys of others, or gathering with my friends? Ahh...they each offer so much joy, so much fulfillment. I might choose to be the bird, but I am the tree.

A bird because they are free, I would feel safer as a bird. There isn't the risk of being cut down. Birds are free and can think and I would want the free will. A tree just waves around.

A bird, so I can fly from tree to tree.
Being a tree, would mean waiting until the bird flies to me.Witch means giving things out of hands, I don't like that.
I prefer making my own decisions.
