Well, I've always thought Neil McCoy was pretty big...of course, he was only half black.
And I remember Cleve Francis, a former heart surgeon who scored a couple of hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Charley Pride was an enigma...nobody really knew he was black until after he hit it big. One of his favorite stories was when he talked about playing a show down South somewhere, and when he walked out on stage, the whole venue went quiet.
He stepped up to the mike, and said "Oh, my! Look at all the white people here!" and jumped into "Kaw-liga". The crowd went nuts...and Charley went on to do all right for himself.
There was also a black guy who played rhythm guitar with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for a while, but I can't remember his name.
Cowboy Troy is an aberration.
I think, if a black singer wants to make it big in Nashville, there's no reason they couldn't, as long as they have the talent. But it's easier to make it as a rapper, where you don't have to have any!

Charlie Pride, the "Pride of Country" had a half dozen number one songs in the 1960s and 70s, and was the only Black country performer for 40 years. He also had his own tv show, and made albums for 30 years. He use to be on CMt in the 1980s. He was a county superstar singer and composer , and was on equal footing with legends such as Johnnie Cash and George Jones. Charlie never played the race ticket, he loved country music, he saw the beauty in the singing, he had a great rich baritone voice, and he was true to his own rural roots, color never was an issue with him, he was bigger than that. today to many people want to make a statement, or get special consideration for there color,. Charlie was good, very good, and even the very white southern male dominated country music business of the 1960s respected him for his talent. So if you got talent, use that, no one cares what color you are, as long as you can sing the song from your heart and mean it.

Aaron Neville and Charlie Pride were top notch country singers .
Rap music has stolen away alot of the promise for black country artists .
A whole new world in the music industry these days .

Neal "Billy's Got His Beer Goggles On" McCoy is pretty big.
In all fairness, based on your question, 98% of white country singers will never be as big as Tim, Garth, or Faith, and it's not about race.

truthfully...im not all that predjudice but ppl in country music r they still beleive the south will rise again, which im not totally against, also they expect colored ppl to be yanks who wanna bring rap, pop, and hip hop into it. the genre that most ppl expect them to b in is rap that would probily be the best genre but u may have a chance ... country ppl r traditionalist they want straigh white southern american christians on stage honestly my self im that way if a gay black northerner from africa who doesnt believe in god i wouldnt listen but they like cowboy troy and so do i because hes most of what the traditionalist want and he's just gitting started ppl like big and rich help to their totally accepting go for it though...

yes, it's possible, others have given you examples of people who have done big things.
but don't think of it as can a black person make it big as a country singer, think of it along the lines of what type of music you love and love to write. as long as your heart and soul is in it, then you have the potential to make it big in any genre.
