Sounds like it could be a king snake. Those are actually quite good snakes. They eat other snakes, including venemous ones. If it is really thin, however, it could possible be a type of garter snake. Sounds more like the king snake based on your description.

Since color vary from snake to snake, it is hard to identify the snake based just on the information you provide alone. It could be numerous snakes. where is you location and if possible give more information pertaining to the colors and patterns of the snake in question. OR go online to the wildlife site of your state and see if you can find the snake you saw or possible a snake guide book containing pictures of snakes in your area. I hope this help you.

The species of black snakes...additional colours vary...actually eat poisonous snakes. They are good.
