I'm writing a book which involves a sailing trip. It would have to be a relatively small sailboat but able to sleep about 3 people. And I was wondering, does such a thing exist?
I know that speedboats often have quite large cabins, and obviously bigger cruise ships do, but can you get 'family' size sailing boats for trips?

If there are any particular types you could say, then I could get more details, that'd be great! (I'm not planning on writing the sailing bit with no experience, I'm going sailing this summer - but I thought I'd work out this bit ahead if I could)

Sure does. I have experienced 26 foot sailboats with a head, galley and sleeping accomodations for 6.
Check these links for some ideas: http://www.huntermarine.com/Models/27/27Index.html

Theyr'e often called pocket cruisers or weekenders.
Generally in the 20+ foot range, trailerable , & sleep up to 4.
They have basic cooking & sanitary facilities such as a small head or portable toilet &a small galley or camper type stove & sometimes a "pop up" camper top.
Had a Catalina 22 which falls into this class.
There are other makers w/ similar boats in this class.
Might look in a sailing magazine & search for cruising clubs.
Not the most luxuruios way to go but is an affordable way to spend a night or two on the water.
Best regards

There are tons of boats out there. Small is a relative term. There are some boats classified as "pocket cruisers" like Bruce Bingham's "Flicka" This is a 20 foot trailerable cruising boat with a galley that can actually cross oceans and many have! Falmouth Cutter is a 23 foot pocket cruiser that I wouldnt hesitate to cross an ocean with either.
Just staying coastal, your options increase exponentially. Catalina and Hunter, both have small (under 30 foot) sailboats available. Other production boats like Beneteau, Island Packet have something in the 30 foot range.
McGregor is a small, trailerable boat that's a motor sailor. I used to laugh at these things because they arent very easy on the eyes and dont look seaworthy. I had one follow me out one day. Later that afternoon, a storm blew in and I decided to head home. I thought to myself that I hope those people in the McGregor find a place to hide because it was about be be very uncomfortable for them. Out of no where, the mcGregor came buzzing by faster than any sailboat I've ever seen and they were warm and dry in a bar with a drink while I was tying up my boat in the rain. I wont laugh at these things again. (well...maybe I will)
Pacific Seacraft has made the Flicka and they have a 24 foot boat called Dana, 27 Orion and a couple 31's that they have built over the years.
Check out boats.com or boattraderonline.com and put in your length requirements. I'm sure you'll be suprised how many boats are out there that fit your parameters.

Others have pointed out the fine Catalina series... I lived aboard a Cat270 for 5 years... albeit alone, but I could pull her out of her slip with 2 hours notice and spend a 4-5 day period cruising around San Diego waters and later San Francisco Bay. I slept 3-4 aboard frequently on day trips.
My lil brother had a Mariner36... amazing the additional space 10 feet of water-line gives you !! My brother was a Naval surface officer, and we used to LOVE going out of San Diego in the nastiest weather with a crew of 3-5 for a 3 day weekend of rough-weather sailing !!
A sailboat IS cozy... it's not an apartment !! It's not a cruise-ship... a good example is a small RV !

They sure do! A family of 4, named Martin, went around the world in a 25 ft. boat. A good example is a used Catalina 25, which can be purchased relatively inexpensively and can be trailered. Macgregor, Hunter and many others build similar boats. Look at this website to see a 20 ft boat which will do it:

To own, a speed boat since around here there is only a river. I do have the need for speed too! I've never been in a sail boat, I think it would be fun. The closest place to sail one would be about 50 miles from here. I think I'd settle for a canoe, cheap, easy to haul, and it fits into the local creeks and ponds.

Yes, however they don't come cheap. Try to find a good used one. Make sure it is ship shape before you take on passengers.
