Get friendly with Google. Fast. Almost every grant out there, whether government or private, is posted on the Internet; you just need to find the right announcement. The problem is, there are a lot of grant-making organizations out there. Some (like the U.S. government) give grants for very narrowly defined purposes (for example, the National Parks Service gives out grants for "preservation and/or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural collections and nationally significant historic properties"), so you need to see if anyone has grants in your organization's area of activity. Others would fund anything that, in their opinion, promotes their stated goals. For example, the Ford Foundation has three major program groups, (1) Asset Building and Community Development, (2) Knowledge, Creativity and Freedom, and (3) Peace and Social Justice. You can apply for grants under any of these headings, and Ford Foundation does not even have a standard grant application form; they want your freeform thinking put down on paper...

Sponsors are a wholly different can of worms. The best way to approach a sponsor is to ask for an in-kind donation (for example, if you need food, go ask a grocery store).

Tell me where you live (City), and give me an idea of what your non-profit will be doing, then I can answer your question.
