Sure...presuming we're talking gradeschool level...

Weigh the Doll:

Make a small teeter totter appropriate to doll size. A two-foot length of wood plank balanced on a fulcrum made of thick pen or pencil would do the trick I think. It is important the fulcrum allow the wood to rock freely about the center of the length.

Put the doll on one end and a five ounce paper cup on the other end...so both are equal distance from the fulcrum. Add water to the cup until the teeter totter is balanced (parallel with the ground). If that doesn't happen with one cup, add another cup and fill it; keep doing this until you get a balanced teeter totter. Then the weight of the doll is about N X 5 ounces per cup = W; where N is the number of five ounce cups. Note: If the last cup added is not completely full, you can estimate the weight with a partial cup included. For example, if there are five full cups and one 1/2 full cup, W = N X 5 ounce per cup = (5 + 1/2) X 5 = 27.5 ounces. Also note, you can use any size paper cup, just change the 5 to whatever the new size might be.

When the students have figured W by balancing the teeter totter, thought experiments can be initiated by asking the following :

Why is the weight of the ragdoll equal to the weight of the water?

What would happen to the teeter totter if one of the cups is emptied? What would happen if another cup is also emptied?
