Most laptops have integrated wireless. If yours does not have 802.11 support, then you will need to get a PC card.
After that you need a wireless router. This normally connects in to the cable/DSL modem and any computer that was connected to the modem connects to one of the switch ports on the back of the router.
If you are going to do this:
Change the default IP address of the router.(Change the third number. So 192.168.0.1 changes to 192.168.xxx.1)
Enable ping blocking on the router.
Change the default administration password on the router.
Change the default SSID of the router's wireless network.
Enable encryption of some sort on the wireless network
(WEP is OK, WPA is better)
This will make your network much more secure from attack from the outside and from anyone 'borrowing' it from the inside.

Unless your laptop came equipped with a wireless card...you'll need to purchase one in order to access the internet. This allows you to access the wireless connection that runs in your building. The best place to get one is Best Buy and they run around $40-$75...depending on the quality. Hope this was helpful.

Some laptops have an integrated wireless card so you don't need anything except for a wireless router and an internet connection. If yours didn't come with an integrated card, you should go purchase a "laptop wireless card" and install it.
