I don't know where you get your information, but the cars you listed are among the greenest SUV's out there. Compare them to the American SUV's like Hummer, Suburban, Yukon, etc. You will see the huge difference.
Pollution and gasoline consumption are two different things. Pollutants that cars spew out are very controlled on these German) vehicles. Pollutants that are caused by the oil refineries and distribution systems are not as easily or tightly controlled and vary by region.
I drive a Mercedes SLK and a Ford F350 Super duty. By keeping my driving to a minimum, maintaining my cars in good working order, and using green fuels in my diesel, I think that is being responsible.

SUV's are usually a waste unless really need the cargo space. You could get a station wagon/small SUV (I know BMW makes one) and seat almost as many passengers and have some good cargo space. They'd be better on gas mileage and usually don't need a V8 like many large SUV's. Better emergency handling too, and less likely to roll over on a sharp turn.

Don't get all caught up in this pollution movement. No one has yet to show that driving a car causes polar bears to die.

Get the car you want, and don't let that all that global warming stuff make you feel guilty. That's what it's designed to do. It politically driven and does not have a scientific basis.

Drive whatever you want!

Bite the bullet and get out of the SUV. Unless you are hauling around band instruments or a bunch of kids, SUVs are evil.

They can't pollute that bad, otherwise California wouldn't let them be sold here.

I drive a Chrysler Plymouth and I am saving gas. I don't know if a car like that would be embarrassing though. If I put gas into my car my tank fills up fairly quick. Depending how much you put in. I enjoy that car though. Hope I was able to help.

Go for what you like. Why buy a car you will be embarrassed to be seen in?
