History and Geography are not taught the way that they used to be. One of my undergraduate students at Wharton couldn't name the presidents from the last 50 years -- yet she was brilliant in Finance.
Another didn't have a clue what the word "peripatetic" means -- but knew that my tie was bought at Hermes.
I stopped watching ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER because I couldn't stand seeing them give so much money to idiots.

I am constantly amazed by how little college educated people know... in the U.S. at least. I think it's bc it is possible to get decent grades w/o trying very hard and not really paying attention. I have a friend who got his BA in English Lit and NEVER read ONE BOOK!!!! He graduated with honors and only ever used Cliff Notes. What a joke.

Well, as a professor, I hate to tell you this but I'm not even surprised by this. This is par for the course today. What disturbs me is not that students don't know something like that but that they don't care that they don't know. That is a pretty intractable problem.
