My first shower was not a good experience. At that time, we were living with the in-laws, and my mother in law said, I'm not suppose to plan it myself. And I waited all 9 months and no one threw me a shower. So the day before labor, she was hosting a party for her cousin's 1 year old boy and decided to throw my shower in. Nobody knew they were coming to a shower. So I didnt have a good experience. This time, I want to throw my own, but she is telling me the same thing. And my sis in law is insisting to host it. My family is coming to visit for father's day and I want the shower when they come, but the place is booked. If I dont have it where my sis in law wants it, she's not going to host. Should I have the shower on father's day when everyone and everything is available? or do 2 showers. One with my fam when they come then one at the hall with the sis later?

Do two....the one with your family could be the one YOU control. Try to get some of your fam to "hostess" it so people can RSVP to THEM. It looks better that way!!

Wow! you're family sounds pretty tactless... but to be honest, so do you! A baby shower is a gift, not something that you are entitled to. I'm sure most of the people who would've been invited to the shower, gave you gifts when the baby arrived. If you want to throw yourself a party, maybe you could throw a welcoming party shortly after the baby arrives; i think it's better etiquette.

Have your own shower when it is convenient for you. Then whether or not you get the second one won't matter as much. The more showers the more prepared you'll be and it is in no way selfish. Your mother in law sounds more like a monster in law.

I typically am against 2nd showers, unless one of the parents is new.

Personally also, Id be mad if I was invited to a shower on fathers day, as this is my kids day, to honor their dad and I should be there to support it.

Plus if youre family didnt throw you the first one, you might get disappointed if you try to include them in another. While I think you deserve a nice shower you didnt get with your first child, I think you might be setting yourself up to get hurt.

A baby shower is only held for the first baby, and a mom-to-be doesn't throw her own. Don't worry, family and close friends will gift you anyway!

well i am having 3...mainly because i live out of the country. my mom had one for me when we came to visit in the states and i am havingone here in denmark with my danish friends and family. mainly because they dont know what they are and i want them to experience the american culture too they way i do theirs. its only fair. so i have to throw these last two for myself cause they have no clue what it is.
the 3rd one is a couples shower, mainly for the guys , except for gifts they only bring diapers or books for beer and bbq.

And here its not unusual to throw a party for yourself...they give themselves huge bday party dinners every year. People don't hold one for them. It's the norm.

Its ok to have more than one shower, i know women that have a shower at church and then with her family and then with her hubbys family. Don't stress about it, you have the most important job...bringing a wonderful baby into the world. Good luck:)

I'd do the two that way you have one with your family and another with "others" - I don't see why you can't have yourself one, if no one else has offered and you will need baby items so I say DO IT & good luck with whatever you decide
