why do goats,deer and cows eat material like shirts,hankies,paper and so on?i,ve seen them eat this stuff.?

my goats,cows and deer like to eat hankies,shirts,paper and so on.i have lots of pictures of them doing so.

I love goats. I used to raise LaManchas. Wonderful things goats.

OK let's talk about ruminants. They have that remarkable 4 chambered stomach that allows them to digest cellulose - the main ingredient in paper, cotton clothing, leaves, wood, and other plant-derived materials. That includes your tax refund check, electric bill, and other important papers. To a goat, cellulose is cellulose.

They're also attracted to the salts in our perspiration - so hankies and ball caps etc. are tempting treats. And many dyes and inks are salt-based - again, a tasty treat.

Of course, goats et al don't know just how toxic things like inks, sizings, dyes, and synthetic blends that are in most paper and cloth products. Some if these can cause a lot of stomach problems - not to mention poison them!

SOOOOO - it's best to keep the goats penned to keep them away from the trash pile and the mailbox.

Would it hurt the goat and cows if I feed them shirts all the time along with their regluar diet.

I used to waitress at a deli, and the deli guy used to chase us around at remaining with a super pungent cow tongue. It become so terrible. i understand if Granny made it, it become stable nevertheless. that is how Grannys roll.

I think it has to do with the fiber and the texture of it, it's something diff rent. Or they need to something to enrich them because they are curious and board.
