JFK represented a new generation coming in to power, he elicited extremely strong emotions from all spectrum's of politics, pro and con, and his death made him a martyr.

JFK's death symbolized an end of innocence in America and forever changed the way we looked at things, at government and especially at ourselves. His death is responsible for everything from the Vietnam war, which he escalated, to the hippie movement.

however, as a president, he wasn't all that

He became a LEGEND by his death and his achievements became sacred. However, a close look at his actions will show you a man with many more failings than virtues. He initiated actions against Cuba's Castro and then backed leaving the anti-Castroites stranded in Cuba after the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Apparently, he made Khrushchev flinch and step back when the Missiles confrontation, however, maybe Khrushchev was simply more "reasonable". The Moon Landing was a moral triumph, and I believe it did happen, however, was it necessary ??. But legends boost patriotism (i.e. Custer, Andrew Jackson, Texas "freedom", Jessica Lynch etc) and the augmentation of his achievements gave pride to the Americans. Clinton got nearly impeached by the Lewinsky affair but Kennedy's escapades are seen, with envy full admiration as youthful pranks.
