I've used it for years and have never had an infection (has detected a few email attachments and some script exploits from sites but it has always stopped them before causing any problems) on my home PC. My employer also uses it on the desktop and servers.

I understand AVG is a decent free alternative if you can't swing the fee for McAfee. I haven't used it though to really endorse it.

** Edit **
In response to the software being heaving on the resources, the software can be configured to limit the amount of CPU resources to consume for scheduled scans. You can also configure it to exclude certain directories or file types (i.e. in my case I develop software so rather than have it continually rescan applications I have written, I exclude my work directory from "On Access" scans. I do, however, leave it as part of the regularly scheduled scan.).

McAfee's is seriously good, but unlike Norton Anitvirus, it really is resource hungry, so you need to need to have all specs that they want or else its going to be one hectic time with the program.
McAfee's also got great features, but while running the antivirus program you better not run anything else coz it can really slow the program you are running other than the antivirus program and the a.p itself.
If you are further interested you can take a look at the following reviews.

Its great, you need to schedule a maintenance check often and make sure you have enough ram to run it since it can slow your computer down.

All the big names finished close so there is not much difference except for Windows Defender which finished significantly lower.
