Yes, that time of the year has come up for me.. the dreaded physical exam! While I know it's very important to get done, I have yet to meet a woman who looks forward to it! My question, though, is.... would it be OK to be "intimate" the day before the exam? I have read somewhere that a woman should refrain from having sex the day before the exam, or else it might infringe on the results. I'm curious to know if anyone has valid proof of this, or whether it's just an old wive's tale?

Should really refrain from intercourse for atleast two days prior to the exam. The cells of the cervix where the doctor pulls the smear from should be your own. Even a condom could irritate the area and your results will come back abnormal (had it happen to me years ago)....then you have to go back and get another pap smear done to make sure you have a good sample.

It's your choice...but if you don't like the exam to begin with...might be worth getting it right the first time.

Good Luck.

Do not use vaginal creams during the 2 days before the test. Do not have intercourse within 24 hours before the Pap smear because it can cause inaccurate test results. You should get this test done when you are not menstruating; the best time is between 10 and 20 days after the first day of the last menstrual period.

You should not have sex at least 2 days before the exam because cells can be damaged and therefore affect your test results. Intercourse, tampons, basically anything inserted into the vagina can potentially "harm" those cells. Your best bet is to wait until after the exam.

That is what my doctor told me. He said because he wants to make sure the cells were mine and not anything from sex. think of it as the same thing when you fast before having a blood test. You want to make sure that the blood cells are yours and not affected by what you have eaten

old wive's tale. Would be nice to be sure and wash before you go to the doctor, but sex doesn't infringe on any test results.

I'm not sure if that's true but I have had sex before my check up and everything has always been fine.
