What are you trying to recover? You should still be able to copy over your old files that are important to you like emails and documents. You may need to convert them to an older format. The Docx format in Office 2007 cannot be read or worked with in Office 2003 with out an add-in. You may run into issues like that, but once you bring your XP box back online, you should be able to get right back to where you were. Good luck.

Tudor gives the best answer, if the hard-drive has been formatted with the NTFS format (which it most likely is), Win98 cant read that file system.

Open MYCOMPUTER, right click in the drive you want to access and select properties. It will tell you there what the file system is - if WIN98 can't read it - it's NTFS.

If your XP were in NTFS, then you have a problem already as 98/ME cant read NTFS partitions, you will need extra software such as Winternal's NTFSDOS which is expensive.
Easier to find a friend with 2000 or XP and then grab the data off their machine.

yes, click on my computer and then click on the xp drive, you clan drag and drop files to whatever folder you want. If you want to boot from that hard drive then change your boot order.
