start with a few modifications. Add a cold air intake, exhaust, new spark plugs and a good tune up. this will make the car sound better, work better, but you'll also see some HP gain.
if thats not enough, slap on a turbo!

get yourself some 9.2 mm cables, some racing sparkplugs, intake, turbo... 150HP wet shot of nos... slicks... droped a few spoons of alcohol in your gas tank... headers.... remove the cat and everything cat back. remove your trunk, doors, all the seats... get only one sparko drivers seat. remove your reverse gear in your tranny and do some short shift there... and you know the regular engine work... and you are all set... good for some racing... I dont know if it will hold ... but... you'll be some cool guy.

It is not intended to go fast, it's intended for fuel economy. Throw in a turbocharger in there if you want it to go faster.
