READ the book! The biggest difference I always notice is that SO much information is left out when they make books into movies. Also, endings are often changed to make the story more "audience-friendly" instead of real (and sometimes not happy). Some examples of when the book is better than the movie are: The DaVinci Code, any James Patterson story, Harry Potter, The Notebook, and many more.

I believe that it is better to read the book. I am an avid reader so my opinion my be biased. Right now I am rereading the entire Harry Potter series before the 7th book comes out. The movies have much less of the books in them because of the lenght of the book. Also the movies focus mainly on action and main events so we don't get the entire plot and miss some parts of the character's personalities.

I would have to say that depending on the author, 9 times out of 10, I find reading the book to be much better. The only exception that comes to mind is "Jaws". The movie was, in my opinion, well made and exciting, while the book was so poorly written, I almost didn't go to the movie.
