Democracy is a political system; Socialism is an economic system. Sweden is a largely socialist _and_ democratic. Specifically, democracy means the people determine political questions, directly or indirectly. Socialism means the people own the economic means of production.

The biggest difference would be that democracy is a governmental organizational system, while socialism is an economic organizational system. It may be tough to understand, but let me try.
Democracy is a form of government wherein, the populace vote on and control the other government. Other forms of government include monarchy, oligarchy, and the like.
Socialism is an economic system wherein the government has the ability to take money from the populace and redistribute it in order to hope for a more socially and economically level playing field. Other economic forms include capitalism, communism, etc...
While these two things actually are very closely tied together, one does not need to happen for the other. You can have a monarchy socialism system, or a democratic socialism (which the U.S is becoming more and more of). One is government the other economic. The economics having to do with how much monetary power and authority the government receives from the governed.

They are two completely different concepts. Democracy refers to how a country is ruled. Socialism is an economic philosophy, of no merit. There is no such thing as a pure democracy anywhere on earth: that implies that people collectively make and enforce the laws. But the laws are far too complex nowadays for that to be workable -- the Federal income tax law runs something like 17,000 pages -- so representatives must be chosed to deal with such matters. Which is why the US is called a republic.
Socialism was originally about sharing the work and the rewards, but it obviously rewards the sluggardly at the expense of the diligent, so is not valid as an economic system.

Democracy, true democracy, is a 30/70 blend of socialism and capitalism.
Socialism: A leftist political ideology that emphasizes the principle of equality and usually prescribes a large role for government to intervene in society and the economy via taxation, regulation, redistribution, and public ownership.
Capitalism: An economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods. Also promotes a free market regulated by supply and demand.

They're apples and oranges.
Democracy is a politcal system and socialism is an economic system, which is not to say you can't have both at the same time.

Socialism is an economic philosophy where Democracy is a form of government. Socialism can be found in democracies and totalitarian governments alike. Just as capitalism is an economic philosophy and can also be found in democracies and totalitarian governments.
