The 1880 Cubs (who were actually called the White Stockings back then) had 42 wins before being handed their tenth loss:

The 1984 Tigers had 38 wins when they lost their tenth game.

Good question. I remember that the Tigers had a record of 35-5 in 1984. I don't remember how many wins they had when the got their 10th loss.

I remember either the Brewers or the Twins doing really well in the beginning of the season in the 80s.

The '84 Tigers started the season 35-5, and went on to win the WS.

But MLB only dates back to 1876. The first professional team was the Cincinnati Red Stockings (1869), and they were undefeated in their first season.

I agree with the previous response. I do know that the 1984 Tigers record of 35-5 was the best record through 40 games, but the Tigers played the duration of that season around .500. I am unaware of anyone has bested that mark through 10 losses.
