Specifically I want to grow trees and shrubs that appeal to birds, butterflies and other wildlife. I need recommendations on what to plant (I live in Kansas) and any opinion as to if there would be a decent market for this type of specialty nursery.

You sneaked up on your anwer.......do you have a market? Who is your competition? You are really narrowing your market and competing with every other nursery and home center. I doubt you could compete in pricing with the large out of state wholesalers.

You might make this work if you turn this into entertainment and education. Lay out a very large demonstration garden where people could come and bird/butterfly watch. Have birding classes.

Your plants must be different than what the nurseries are selling, maybe you also have native plants.

Other retail options might draw in customers: a bird supply store selling seeds and feeders....or if your demo garden is beautiful, you could put in a small restaurant where people could come and bird watch and eat.
