usually each jeweler will have a slightly different value. Either you see the jeweler is part of a member association and certified or not; talk to them, make sure they have been in business a while; see if a friend has a recommendation

Several (if not all) answers are right on the money. Go to a certified gemologist, or a very reputable jewlrey store, one that has been around for a long time and tell them as christie said that you don't want to sell it, that you just want it appraised for insurance. Make sure they give you a written estimate on the stores letterhead, not a scratch piece of paper! Do get a few estimates to get an understanding of the range of what your ring might be worth.
Oh!!! VERY Important!! If this ring has a fairly large stone, ie.. a diamond or a precious stone, (emerald, ruby, ect..) and they want to take it say, to the back of the store, away from your sight, and they say they want to clean it or show it to someone for the estimate, be kind, but firmly say would you mind if the ring stays out here with me? The other person can come out front and they can clean it out front too. The reason for saying all of this is my uncle owns one of the largest jewlery stores in Oklahonma City, and he told me stories of other stores swithching the stones in rings for a lower quality. or even fake stones. If you have a pretty good grade on the stone in your ring. don't take a chance on losing it! Hope this helps!

An appraisal is an estimate of the value of the item. Each appraisal will be different but should be in a similar range. It may be best to get several appraisals and average them together.

Well thats exactly why you want to take it to as many places as possible. If you go to five different ones and they all give you about the same price you can be pretty sure that its around that. If they all vary a lot then be careful and go to even more. Make sure the appraisers are certified etc.

Tell the jewler before you present the ring that you don't want to sell it, you only want the appraisal for insurance purposes. Then you get the following benefits. The jewler gives you the most accurate value he/she is able to. The jewler will give you the appraisal in writing. If you are interested in selling it, you can take the ring to another jewler to sell, and you have the written appraisal with you for verification.

It would probably be worth taking the ring to more than one appraiser, which would allow you to compare their information -- they should be pretty close to one another on the value of the ring, but I doubt each one will offer an identical assessment. If this is for insurance purposes, be aware that you don't want the appraisal to be too high, because it will make your insurance more expensive.

You don't. That is what a apprasial is. One person's opinion by weighing certain factors to get the best apprasial price. More than likely if you get 3 apprasials, they will different somewhat. Just make sure you go to a reputable jeweler for the appraisal so that you can get the best price. Make sure your appraisal is done by a board certified gemologist.
