Assuming one built a shelter, and filled it with the equipment one would need to survive the nuclear winter afterwords. Also assuming you are out of the direct blast area, could a bomb shelter survive the impact of a meteor along the size of the one that hit the gulf of mexico 65 million years ago, and took out the Dinosaurs?

LOL Nice sentiment, but as I've never seen the movie or read the books, the reference is lost on me.

I'm not some doomsdayist, and I'm not going to rush to my back yard with a shovel or anything, it's just a hypothetical question for my own edification.

I'm also talking about the average shelter- like the ones they sell that the typical person could afford.

Depends on the size of the explosion and how close. If a nuclear weapon were to burst in the air at an altitude determined to cause the most damage, a bomb shelter, even directly under ground zero, would permit survival. But a ground burst would destroy it.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. A shelter is meant to withstand the immediate impact, not a long nuclear winter. So, if many years of survival are planned, it may be difficult. It is better to think of a colony in space.

Yes a bomb shelter could survive an atomic blast. but it cannot stop the radiation from the atomic blast.

Obviously, it depends on the shelter. How strong it is and how deep in the ground it is. If it is 5 miles below ground built with reinforced steel and titanium with walls/roof/floor that are 500 feet thick, I think you would be safe in it unless our sun went supernova.
