Be sure you dont have any IP address assigned to that laptop.

Go to start / Run / cmd and type ipconfig /ALL your ip address should start with 192 ..

Ignore any suggestions because we really don't have enough information to answer your question. You may have connected the cables to the wrong ports on the router. Usually there is a special port for your internet connection, and the others are for computers. You may have incorrect TCP / IP settings on the laptop. You may need to reset the router, so that you can reconfigure it from scratch.

Not knowing these things I suggest some basics. Go to the website of the manufacturer of your router and download their quickstart guide. They almost always have a 3 to 4 page guide on getting started quickly with their routers, which should show you how to connect the router, the default password to use, and how to configure it to work with just about any computer.

If you still can't figure it out, ask here again but provide more information like the make / model of the router, make / model of the laptop or ethernet card if purchased separately, and which ports you are plugging your cables into.

Go to Network properties. Right click on the "network places" icon. For the LAN or High Speed connection, right click on that Scroll down in the local area network properties until you find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click on it, properties. Be sure that both obtain IP Address automatically and obtain DNS automatically are clicked.

Try rebooting (power off/on) your router to make sure you clean out any cache.

Check to make sure you've disabled the wireless card if there is one on the laptop, aswell make sure you have current drivers for the wired Network card for the laptop.

Swap out with a different patch cable using a different port on the router.

Lastly from the start menu find 'Command prompt'
At the C:\>
type the following
ipconfig /release (then press enter)
then type the following
ipconfig /renew (then press enter)

that should fix most of your problems,

Cheers.

So if i'm analyzing this wisely you have a router that has basically 2 obtainable connections. If it particularly is right then i've got faith you ought to get a different router with 4 ports.
