I am moveing to in a week (near Albany) and I have never been to New York before. I'm just wondering what it is like. I have lived in California my whole life, so this will a big change I'm sure.

I'm from the Albany area.

It'd be hard to decribe all the differences; send me a message if you have specific questions. In general:

It's a lot greener and the mountains are smaller. The albany area has three larg-ish cities, Albany (a mix of urban, residential neighborhoods and suburban), Troy (an old river town bouncing back as an arts town), Schenectady (a flat-lining industrial center hanging on for dear life). The combined metro sprwal is fairly limited ot between these cities and into Saratoga County to the north; once can get out of these cities in any other direction and be in the country: small villages, small farms, hills, mountains, forests and lakes.

Albany, Troy and Saratoga Springs have decent nightlife scenes (especially college-age, young professional and live music).

Spring and Fall are beautiful; summer can get too humid, and we have winter (not as bad as the midwest, generally). Websites could probably give you better snow/temperature ranges than I could. Fall colors make the bad partso f the year worthwhile.

Albany is about a three-hour drive from NYC under ideal conditions; there are about a dozen trains per day each way also.

New York (upstate) is a lot slower in pace than in New York City but the people are just as cool, just significantly healthier.
