I would love to travel to Alaska. How do i start planning for this? I would like to spend a least a month there. Are there cabins available for travelers like me there? Help someone, help me plan, before the glaciers are gone.

If you have a destination town, city or county picked out you may contact the visitors bureau. I planned a trip to Fairbanks and was sent visitors guides for several locations. Good luck on your trip, it's one you'll never forget!

there are lots of places that rent cabins.
you could also rent an RV; that way you can cover some distances.

to plan, decide how you want to do: drive? fly? boat?
you can do boat without being stuck on a giant cruise ship; the Alaska Marine Highway is a state-run ferry company that serves coastal towns throughout southern Alaska, and some boats even make it down into BC and Washington State. The Southearnen coat is magnificent - glaciers that reach down to the sea, orcas, and so mant bald eagles overhead they're like pigeons.

by air, both Fairbanks and Anchorage have decent service from the lower 48. Alaskan Airlines is supposed ot be a top-notch outfit (others serve, too).

You can drive; it takes a while and gas is even more expensive in remote areas. Exchange rates are a lot worse in remote sections of Canada as well.

Expect to get a cracked windshield, and bring more than one spare tire. Don't go faster than 45; moose can crop up very quickly and you generally don't walk away from a moose collision.

Don't spend too much time in Fairbanks or Anchorage; they're not why one goes to Alaska. To get outside of coastal areas, you will need wheels, your own or rented. Long-distance public transport is scant and expensive.

Pick up a copy of The Milepost at your local Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc. It's worth its weight in gold for a mile-by-mile description of roads, services, sites, etc.

I hope you go. It's wonderful!
