I am 27 + 4 and have been getting braxton hicks for over 50hrs now. They are irregular and differ in intensity. Sometimes get two an hour and then maybe six an hour. I have had an increased discharge and in the early hours was accompanied by lower back ache. I went to the hospital for a check up after 12hrs and was told that my cervix is still tightly closed.

I know this is my bodies way of getting ready for real labour, but what concerns me is the continuation of these braxton contractions and does it mean I am more likely to have a premature baby? As you can understand I dont wish the braxton hicks to turn into full labour, but does braxton hicks do this?

Help and advice please.

Braxton hicks can be very very sore try to remain calm when you get them and remember to breathe in and out its just natures way of preparing your body for the big event. I suffered with them for months and had a healthy baby two and a half weeks early. All the best.

braxton hicks feel like period cramp with a tightening of the stomach.labour pains are more intense and you will know the difference when they start.but since you are only 27+4 i would keep a close check on it and write down time and strength of each one.then you may start to see a pattern.i have had 5 children and my braxtons weren't strong or noticeable til about 34-35 weeks.Take care rest and good luck ,hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well x

you were smart to go to the hospital to be checked out. i had something similar to you, and at first they seemed random but after 9 hours were coming steadily every 5 minutes. after 15 hours i went to labor and delivery and they said i was in labor. they stopped it (i was only 30 weeks) and gave me tons of meds. they said if they were coming at least 7 in an hour, steadily, and getting worse, to go back in. 6 an hour is ok (i.e. no more than 1 every 10 minutes). i know it's uncomfortable but hang in there. and if you're worried, go get checked out again. i know you don't want a 3 lb. baby.

I'm not sure what you mean by 27 + 4....are you 31 weeks pregnant?

If you've already been to the hospital and you know your cervix is closed, try to relax. Once your contractions are regularly five minutes apart, you're going to want to go to the hospital again. But listen to your body--if you feel like something is wrong, trust your instinct and go to the hospital again. Good luck.
