How can it be on the banned substance list in sports?

Marijuana, though it's been legalized or decriminalized by several state governments, is still illegal under federal law. Federal law supersedes state laws, ergo it's illegal everywhere in the USA.

Even if it weren't, however, sports could still ban it - as private organizations, they are allowed to make their own rules. For example, there are a number of legal medical uses for Growth Hormone, but because of its strength-building effects it is banned by every major sporting organization (though the difficulty in detecting it makes its use quite prevalent despite that). Likewise, it's perfectly legal for you to get roaringly drunk at home, but your workplace probably has rules against doing so there. Being legal doesn't mean something is allowed in every situation.

I think all of those banned substances stipulate "unless prescribed by a doctor". I don't think any pro athlete is going to get prescribed Mary Jane, simply b/c I think it's usually prescribed for problems that would keep someone from being a pro athlete (like glaucoma).

Thats a funny question. I dont even think baseball really cares about a little bud smoke amongst its players. Now steroids and of course things like cocain and amphetamines would cause some commotion, but herb is relatively harmless. And Im sure thats what major league baseball thinks too.

Because its illegal its only perscribed for medical purposes and if you had that kind of medical problem(glaucoma or cancer) you wouldn't be playing sports of any kind professionally

the common use of medicinal mary jane is for glaucoma...not to many active ball players would have it. It caused Kirby Puckett to retire prematurely

Because it is illegal without a prescription, and even then it is only legal in a couple of states. You are simply barking up the wrong marijuana plant in this case.

It is banned if you don't have a prescription. Just like it is illegal if you don't have a prescription.
