I'm completely in agreement with it. You see it all the time when liberals pick a group or person to hate (the rich, the religious right, or Rush Limbaugh). They're always for taking someone else's property or rights, but God help us if one of them gets it in their little head that some nonexistent right they believe they have gets "violated".

Democracy is essentially the rule of the majority, regardless of how it will effect the minority. Since both wolves obviously would want the lamb for lunch, the majority would rule that they should eat the lamb for lunch even though this would end the lamb's life.

Liberty is the idea that everyone has the same basic rights, in this case, the right to exist and be alive. Liberty is not necessarily the rule of the majority but rather the protection of individual rights. In this case, even if the majority vote to eat the lamb for lunch, the armed lamb (whether physically armed with a firearm or armed with some sort of rule of law) can object to the vote of the majority as it violates it's individual right to be alive. Also, it may be suggesting that only by having an armed populace can liberty be truly preserved.

Ben Franklin didn't say it, but it is often misattributed to him. It was apparently first said by James Bovard in 1994. The word lunch doesn't even seem to have existed during Franklin's lifetime.

In any case, the original quote seems to be "Democracy needs to be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner."

Ben Franklin said it and I concur. The problem is that the US does not have a Democracy. It is a Representative Republic, true Democracy does not work. It may be interesting to see if it would but that is not how the founding fathers set it up. Cheers

I think that I am glad our founding fathers were wise enough to create a representative republic, as opposed to a democracy.

"Democracy is the worst political system in the world, with the exception of all others." Who said that?

Have you ever noticed that when liberals have won in incredibly close elections (Kennedy v Nixon) and (Carter v Ford) there is never any voter fraud, but when the shoe is on the other foot they're foaming at the mouth!
