Someone is selling a Direct DVR and I have cable and am wondering if it needs a Direct subscription to work.

No a DirecTV DVR will not work with your cable provider. DirecTV uses ENCODED and ALL DIGITAL SIGNALS to their DVR's and receivers. Cable companies (Even those that have digital cable) do NOT provide ALL DIGITAL channels. And your next question, A DirecTV DVR needs a subscription to be able to record, but if it has saved movies/shows you can view them without a subscription but a window will pop up everday letting you know that your DVR service is not active.

No, Direct TV's DVR only works with their service.

The DVR has to be connected to a DirecTV satellite. It will not work.
