I was looking around for some mp3s and found them on http://justmusicstore.com. I searched justmusicstore.com for a few obscure artists and I was amazed at the depth of their selection. There is content on justmusicstore.com that cannot be found anywhere else.

I am a club DJ and am alway on the look out for the latest tunes and i have been absolutely blown away by what I have found on this site.

Tunes that I can't buy anywhere online or sometimes find in the shops. Even things which to my knowledge are only knocking around on vinyl. This sounds like a blatant advert (which it most definitely is not) but last night I was like a kid in candy shop and managed to find about 85% of all the sought after tracks I have been looking for over the last month.

The search facility is pretty crappy and browsing is not really much of an option. If you know the artists you are looking for, or the exact name of the track you want then this site is great.

They also have a few lists of the latest UK and US charts etc but these don't really demonstrate the depth of what the site seems to have available.

The listening interface works well and they have adopted a fast-forwarding approach in the sample which will play about 10 seconds fast forward a bit, play some more and so on. This is very helpful, I am always a bit frustrated when the 30 second sample you get on some other site seems to miss out the best or worst parts of the music.

This site is all about its content and having used a lot of the mp3 sites I am very happy to have found this one which seems to cater for my particular (non mainstream) tastes really rather well.

There are lots of possible sites to get free and legal music, without having to depend on the questionable legalities of limewire or bearshare. The sites below may not have current top ten hits, but there is lots of good music, older and contemporary, that is freely and legally available:

Music sites such as iTunes shop or PureTracks in Canada quite often have a free track or two per week. I'm sure there are others.

There are many music podcasts (such as, for example, CBC Radio 3 which features new Canadian music). Check out sites which categorize podcasts (such as iTunes or Podcast.net) for lots of free downloads.

Amazon.com used to have free MP3 downloads, but I can't find the option any longer.

The Cylinder Preservation & Digitization Project has free music from the early 1900's if your tastes go that way.

Take a look at the sound archives at Archive.org. As with the Cylinder Preservation & Digitization Project, music here will probably be older.

There are lots of independent bands and music artists who provide their music freely on the internet. Check out sites like Myspace.com under their "Music" section - lots of artists provide music there. Sometimes established bands will give new songs test runs on sites like this.

Hope this helps.

Gnutella Sharing Network
---------------------------------

Limewire - www.limewire.com - Very good, no trojans, etc.

Shareaza - www.shareaza.com - Also good, no paid version, also includes larger (but slower) eDonkey Network support

BitTorrent (use when you want teh entire album cd at once, or large load of similar songs)
-------------

1. Download a BitTorrent software like uTorrent (www.utorrent.com)

2. Search for what you want at one of
thepiratebay.org
www.isohunt.com

3. Download the torrent file, open it with the downloader software and download!

Enjoy! (but it is illegal of course. use at your own risk)
-------------

Piratebay.org , you have to download a tracker but it's not that difficult, you don't even need to register to dl stuff. I found songs I couldn't find on itunes and other sites.

www.limewire.com; www.sharebear.com
But i caution you,for these websites are known to have viruses and trojans on the downloads and links sometimes. I'd be very careful if i were using these sites myself. I suggest using yahoo music/radio to watch and listen to your favorite artists.
