There is a baseball shapped, white object growing in my backyard, What is it?

Question

Its is the size of a baseball, white, it has NO roots or anything like that, it has an onion smell too it, and when I cracked it open, it almost looked like snot came out of it. Ive lived in my home in rural NE for 4 yrs now, and nothing like this has EVER grown in my yard, nor have I planted anything like this, it is between a lilac bush and an old tree that was cut down about 1.5 yrs ago. Can anyone give me even a clue to what this might be?

it is a type of fungi related to the mushroom family, we called them puff balls because the snot as you put it, when it dries it turns into a powder and when a person or animal steps on it breaks open and shoots out a cloud of (usually green) powder into the air the power lands on what ever stepped on it and gets carried off. That is how it spreads its spores

I would guess that it is a type of mushroom. They tend to grow around old, dead trees, especially dead elm trees. try researching mushrooms on the internet, or go to your local library or bookstore and find it in a book.

Search for `Giant Puffball fungi` on any search engine. Edible when young, and `snotty` when old, Giant Puffballs occur in/near wooded situations.
