Without having to go out and buy a proper stamp, is it possible to make a simple wax stamp, or to just use it to seal a letter.

Melt candle wax on the closed envelope flap. As it's drying you can imprint anything you want. Try coins, forks and pencils to make the print you want.

You can even make the stamps on wax paper then affix them to the envelopes with a little melted candle wax (as glue) to set them.

Carve it out of wood, or if you are very technically inclined, from what you want the seal to look like in clay, and pour metal over it. That's the real method. It takes a lot of effort though, and while it will produce the best results, I would recommend wood or Clay.

Also, candle wax works, but it's not the best bet. I would go out and buy sealing wax, it's much stronger and stiffer holding an imprint much better. it also has stuff in it that makes it stick better.

My daughter has done this for Textiles exam. Get a red candle and melt it to dip on your item, find a button that has a design on it and press into the wax. Works really well. If you have some ribbion cut it like it was a snake's fork tounge and stick it into the melted wax for a final effect!

You could use a rubber stamp from a craft shop. Small ones are not expensive. They can be pressed into hot enamel without harming them so hot wax shouldn't be a problem.

candles works very well as wax seals, and if you have a lighter, then just go buy a candle and use the melted wax to be a seal

You could also make stamps of almost any description from polymer clay (clayers do it all the time). You can sculpt, indent or build up the raw clay in any way you wanted before baking it (275 F, 15 min for most things)... or you could impress anything on it to make the pattern including another stamp or a "texture" sheet... or you could even draw out what you want in black ink then send it to the ReadyStamps folks who will make a sheet of stamps (and molds too) from whatever you send them:
(info on them here: http://www.polyclay.com/ready.htm )

If you want more info about making stamps from polymer clay, check out at least this page at my site for loads of info, lessons, examples, etc.:

if you're good with a knife, you can carve your own design out of a piece of wood and melt a candle onto the document you want to seal, then press down on it with your custom design.
