Michael Stipe once said that it's a southern phrase meaning "at the end of ones tether".

when things are going wrong and you lose faith in things and people.

It's a southern saying when someone's losing it, he's talked about this one in interviews a few times, and had said it was about an obsession he had over someone, not too different from The Police' "Every Breath You Take". Prob. written about the same person as "The One I Love".

It's way more clearer than most of the songs he wrote in the 80s, but when he wrote this he hadn't come out. Since "Green" he's been a lot more clearer in his writing.

"Losing my religion" is an obscure and little used southern phrase referring to someone having a close call or embarrassing themselves. The song is ultimately about someone who has a crush on another person, but is afraid to tell them.
