The Chicago School District is being sued because a substitute teacher showed Brokeback Mountain to an eighth-grade class. One student claimed to have been "traumatized." Her grandparents are seeking a cool half-mil--$500,000--in damages.

Personally, I think the movie's great, but not for eighth-graders and not for school. I also think it shouldn't "traumatize" a kid, at least not to the tune of 500 K. (Just don't call in that substitute again!) In 2005, this student's grandparents, who are her guardians, complained about books with curse words.

What do you think of this?

I dont agree with the movie being shown to eighth graders, its rated R right? Was there a signed slip from the parents allowing their kids to watch this movie, because this age is not old enough to watch a rated R movie.

I also think that 500 thousand is way too much just for gay love scene, the grandparents are just looking for cash. Its not like kids today dont see worse than this on any given day.

I believe that is illegal. It's an R rated movie. The school should have been more careful in reviewing the sub's lesson plan. I completely understand the grandparents' issue.

I can understand any child who is not familiar with various sexual issues being traumatized by exposure to one. While I would think a 13 y.o. would have a little more knowledge, I would not necessarily expect it. So I can understand the "trauma". That's why R movies are rated R and why kids can't watch them without permission of their parents. It was absolutely inappropriate for school and I support action against the school, though a legal suit would not necessarily be, well, necessary.

First of all, she committed a crime. It is illegal to show a film with the rating that this one has to 8th graders without the parents permission. She did it in secret, a confession she knew it was wrong. She did it to further her own agenda. The school district has a responsibility to protect the children in its care from inappropriate material. Here, they failed. They should be held accountable and so should the teacher who illegally appropriated the rights of the children's parents.

Whether the child was traumatized or not is really irrelevant. The teacher committed an illegal act and the school district allowed her to. That is wrong and they should be held accountable.

Showing an R rated movie to 8th graders IS braking the law.

But the damages are silly, and will not be won.

Any excuse to sue someone. But yes, I agree, that is not a movie to show 8th graders, or anyone in my opinion as I didn't like the movie at all! It was saccharine sweet and not to my tastes!

No, you won't be in a position to sue for that. yet there are some issues you're able to do. confer with the instructor, confer with the critical. I wager they are prepared to be certain some thing so which you would be able to end this up. besides the shown fact that that's as much as you to speak to them. do no longer assume them to return to you. in case you won't be in a position to graduate, that's ok. it is easy to do the full commencement ceremony, in simple terms as in the adventure that your getting a level. i understand at lot of persons who've executed this. then you definately pass to summer season college and get the degree. Your protection stress will purely be not on time for some months. they are going to nonetheless be in simple terms as recommend to you at boot camp.

I would of been traumatized if I saw gay guys, poor kids.

Plus like everyone else said, it's wrong to show an R rated movie to 8th graders.

I think they have a right to sue,now their kid has to live with the nightmare she saw.

The school shouldn't be sued. Obvosly she or he is spoiled rich little brat that her Grandparents should realize this. Unfortunitly as Grandparents they don't realize what a brat this kid is being. In a few years though the kid will be arrested for something minor making them realize finally this kid is just a brat.
