Dr. says be patient it'll take longer because there's no cartilage left but I'm too young for replacement (53) so he was buying some time. I probably came back to work too quickly (9 days after surgery) It's still very painful and swollen and now I'm getting worried that I'll never be able to walk without a limp. Anyone have similar situation that can give me some encouragement? I'm not planning to run a marathon, I just want to be able to function again.

I agree with your doctor, I have given similar advice to my patients too, 50's is too early for a replacement usually but if repeated csopes and pain killers are not useful then I guess the surgeon could consider a replacement some time soon. in the meantime, do be patient, stick with the doctor's advice, rest as much as is suggested and ask doctor about chronic pain management medicines like, neurontin, lyrica, amitriptyline, cymbalta etc that may also help to buy some more years, good luck
