During a conversation a friend told me she had heard of one state but wasn't sure where it is. I have never heard of "legally" having two spouses.

i think your friend is refering to Utah. and no, you cannot be legally married to more than one person. what i believe they do is they get married to the first one legally...and have a unlegal ceremony for the additional wives. so in reality...if there was a divorce, he's only be able to actually divorce one, the others would just be a relationship gone bad. none of those other "wives" could ever sue for alimony.

Many moons ago Utah was a state that was famous for men having more than one wife. I'm not sure but I think they they put a stop to it. I know the Mormons still practice the religion but it's not legal anymore.

No, it's not legal in any State to have more then one wife. Now, I'm sure people will tell you it's allowed in Utah because Mormons practice it. Well, I can assure you that's not true! If someone in Utah is caught with more then one wife, they are prosecuted! And Mormons no longer practice Polygamy, only certain people who have broken off from the Church practice it. If you're Polygamist in the Mormon Church and you're caught, you will be excommunicated.

Yea, Utah is the only state in the US. That I've ever herd of that kind of practice. Now, rather or not it's legal is another matter. I, for one, have not been curious enough to have even to checked into it.

"Federal law prohibits polygamy in the territories. Federal law also does not provide legal recognition of polygamy. It defines marriage as one man, and one woman."
