OMG I was just going to ask this same question, My neighbor mows 1/2 my lawn because he wants his side to be uniform. He mows up to my walk way right down the middle of my lawn, if I don't follow his schedule my lawn looks like #^&$. So I just got out there today and mowed my lawn before his scheduled Thursday mow day (i am serious lol) . I am sure I will put him in a FRENZY when I plant a bush on that side of the my property. But all in all he is a great neighbor

In the scheme of things some might say this is really petty. To each his own but there are a couple of ways to look at it:
One he could be trying to get you to cut yours shorter-really a subliminal message to you
Two his wife doesnt want to get involved and thinks its enough to mow their grass
Three he could be irritated that his wife reminds him that his neighbor always mows on a regular basis
Four he could simply have so much on his mind that he just doesnt remember that you asked him not to mow it.
Of course their are countless other possibilities but i try to always stop and give the other person the benefit of doubt and presume that their heart is pure. Just make sure that whatever your course of action is you can live with it. If you have to ask if you can then you probably shouldnt do it. I also like the idea of BBQ and Beer suggested by another answerer.
i hope this help

Yes I think you should ignore it. Besides you should be lucky, and thankful that your neighbor cuts a part of your lawn. I think your taking this too seriously. Instead you should be talking to your friends about it and say, "Hey check this, my neighbor mows my lawn and he doesn't even know it, now that's what's awesome." Then you should show them that he does mow it as proof of what an awesome neighbor you have. Then they'll think that you have it made...lol.
This may be something that only a smart *** might do, but it's a whole lot better than being a jerk.

Well you could start by thanking them for the thought, but you would really just like to do it yourself. I read quite a bit about grass types, water fall, compared to mowing height. So maybe if they still insist that it is no problem for them...you could go on about your grass type and what height you feel it is to be ... etc. Then they might just understand that you want to do it yourself.

I don't think you'd be a jerk if you just said I like to mow my own lawn thanks. My neighbor mowed over my baby pine tree that I planted on Arbor day. You need to nip it in the bud before you fall victim.

choose your battles. But, if it is so important to you, talk to him about it. Maybe he is confused about the property line.
You could mow that area each time you mow, so it is the same height on your property.

haha, sorry I like hearing about the little niggling things!
Maybe just say something like "hey, thanks for mowing my bit of the lawn, but I really don't mind doing it myself. It is almost meditative to me, I like to do it in sections like a puzzle and I can never include the bit you mow"
Do you know what I mean? Just a thought...

Say thank you for your recent efforts to cut my grass. And I am very appreciative of your work. But, you know what. I want to keep it the way it is. Please do not be offended, but this is my lawn and I really want to mow it the way that I do.
thanks so much and again I do appreciate your recent efforts.

"hey nice neighbor... if you would mow parts of MY lawn, maybe you could mow the rest so at least my lawn is maintained at the same height"
"while you're at it... we could have beer & BBQ"

All I can think of is that episode of jackass where they played a trick on Bam's dad. They dug a really big and deep hole in his yard and then camouflaged it with leaves and debris. The poor old guy drove his lawn mower right into the hole. Pretty lucky he didn't get hurt.
