How to choose - there are so many fantastic books out there!
You don't give your age so firstly if you are an adult:
My favourite book of all time is Pride and Prejudice - I read it again and again. I agree with another answerer that Enid Blyton should be read (whatever your age). I also like most of the Bronte sisters work. I liked The Davinci Code by Dan Brown but didn't like others by same author. The Oxford Murders by Guillermo Martinez is reasonable but not really a must read book.
If you like "raw" books based on true lives try Lynda La Plante.
I recently read The Gentle Spirit by Dostoyevsky - It was a mad confused read, but a fabulous portrayal of someone close to madness after their wife commits suicide. I suppose as one of the supposed "Great" authors, you could give this a try.
Tender is the night by F. Scott Fitzgerald is another cracking book
If you are a child try JK Rowling, Enid Blyton regardless of age.
Older children might enjoy Jeff Stone (martial arts based )
Robert Muchamore's Cherub series, The Barf-O-Rama series ( very very funny and totally gross) - I'd recommend these for adults too if you want a good belly laugh!
There are so many to choose from - as soon as I finish this I'll think of fifty more I wish I had suggested!

I wouldnt call it a 'classic' but an amazing story to read is definitely My Sister's Keeper, by Jodie Picoult. It tells a story, from four character's perspectives, about a girl who was conceived and born into the world to supply cord blood for her sister who has a life threatening disease. An emotional read that feels like it is real. Highly recommended.

For an readable classic go with To Kill a Mockingbird or East of Eden. I love novels with a stong good vs. evil storyline.
