I know that among women in the South, an extremely small wasp waist was prized, so corsetts were all the rage, as was also extremely white skin. In the South, tanned skin implied lower class, so women wore very large sun bonnets on their heads when going out of doors to protect against the slightest amount of sunlight getting to their skin, and they wore cotton gloves, even in the summer, for the same reason. They also carried and used parasols, which are umbrellas for keeping out the sun. I hope this helps.

There were obviously some differences, especially in the fabrics, as the climates were so different. In the north, many women wore woolens and in the south, cottons and muslims.

Here are some places for you to start ...

Sounds like an interesting project, good luck!

Little difference
Women wore long gowns and hoops
Men wore tailed coats.

Did your know that until the Civil War, mens boots or shoes were not differentiated for right and left?
