With difficulty. It is a civil offence therefore unless the person lighting up threatens violence the police will not attend. That leaves it to local council snoopers. The fines are heavy and devolve not only on the landlord but any member of staff who is seen to be, by their lights (no pun intended) ignoring the offender. Local government being what it is, with councillors being mainly concerned with keeping their perceived place in society and the little bit of power that goes with it I think we can expect some bad fallout. I personally am a non smoker but have spent most of my life working in and around bars, nightclubs and hotels and I have to say that it never bothered me greatly but having just "escaped" from that trade I can tell you that I don't envy one bit the person who is going to have to tell the seven foot drunk who has been smoking for forty years in his local that he "can't smoke in here" .

In the USA, there are enough people who get bent out of shape over smoking that the peer pressure is enormous. Hopefully, the good folks in Brittan will not succumb to this and resist government interference in your life. BTW, I am a non-smoker, but I think those who want to light up should be able to do so.

I'm a smoker...but how can you say "i'll smoke where i bloody well like & no one will ever tell me any different".....what in a pub...? OK so you get fined on the spot £50.think of the poor publican...fine up to £2500 for being seen to be allowing it, wether or not he/she was or wasn't.
I can understand smokers who feel hard done by, but this will be law and all smokers will have to abide by it, including myself.

its not only in Britain here in the US it is that way also. Where I live they just passed a Law saying we can't smoke in public parks. We are slowly losing our freedom to smoke. It is crazy.

While i can appreciate that non smokers do not want to inhale my smoke, i still have to say why are smokers more understanding about that then non smokers who don't want us to smoke anywhere????
They could have catered for both then everybody would have been happy.
The government don't want to ban smoking period though do they as they make way to much money out of us then we are treated like smack heads or something!!!!!!!

It's really easy - the government place heavy fines on the landlords who then stop you smoking because otherwise they pay £2000 fines. Simple - and it's working great in Scotland, even Glasgow where dogs and children smoke

I tell you how they will enforce it,you will get yourself fined and
the owner of the place your smoking fined, then you will get
your @ss banned from the affore mentioned establishment.
I smoke, but that is the reality of the UK smoking ban.

You're lucky you get to smoke in certain restaurants. Over here, in NY you can't smoke anywhere public.
I wish it was the '60s. You could even smoke in classrooms.

being an ex smoker i can understand your point of view but trust me... when you've quit smoking and got all the crap out of your system the last thing you'll want is someone elses second hand smoke in your face... and you will quit one day (unless you're an idiot!)
