I just upgraded my ATT / SBC Yahoo DSL to a faster line & its slower. I have a Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHZ router (WRT54G) and a Siemans Modem 4100.

When I connect directly to the modem its faster but slows down when I go wireless thru the router. I've been on the phone for hrs with ATT and Linksys and still can't figure this out.

I have a desktop and a laptop connected to the wireless network and I have a security WEP set up so no one else is cluttering the line.

Can it be that I need a new router? or WHAT ELSE CAN IT BE?
Its slower than 54mbs when I went to speed test it was 6.3 kbbs, it takes literally minutes to load.

Wireless connection says EXCELLENT. I have had this connection for over a year and just started having this problem.

Wireless is in same room. I already tried turning everything on and off several times. I even reset my router and moved it to 11.

I appreciate any suggestions.

Check two things. One the firmware in your router, if linksys has a newer one get it and load it. Two power everything off, then boot the DSL modem (4100 first) wait for it to initalize. Then connect the router, wait for it to initialize. Then start a computer and test the speed. If all is well your done.

if not check the MTU settings in the router.. they are on the WAN setup page. For AT&T it should be 1492 it is amazing what that little change will do for you.

If all that fails get a new router. Our linksys would not give us 5megs on cable at all (2.9-3.1 was the best I could get) , I changed to an AirEpoch unit and have the full 5 without issue.

You might also want to recheck all your machines for a virus or trojan that could be eating up the bandwidth.

Get rid of your WEP key all it does is slow the connections instead us the filter mac address that the linksys provides
it only allows that computer to connect to you wireless network
to find the mac address on the laptop in the run type cmd, then type IPCONFIG /all look for physical address (make sure you use the one in your wireless adapter.

Using a wireless connection to your router WILL slow you down some if you are using encryption, WEP, WPA, WPA-2 etc......

If you are not using any encryption i would set it up to use at lease WEP at the very least. Of course all of these encryptions can be broken, but it will give you some protection.

Wireless will probably be slower than a right away connection. The first-rate you'll be able to desire for is fifty four Mbps that's approximately part the velocity of a right away connection (one hundred baseT) If your sign force is not up to nice the velocity is going down even extra.
