We're staying in Old Montreal, but are used to using public transportation abroad. Looking for a place to have a nice dinner, upscale, formal. Any other tips would be great also.

Oh, my God! You are going to one of the world's great restaurant cities, remember (but just do not look for a decent BBQ, it does not exist here!)

Old Montréal has some fine restaurants but it is touristy. The best areas full of restaurants where it is hard to find a poor one are the Plateau area (centered around Rue Duluth where it crosses St-Laurent and Berri) and the ethnic neighborhoods surrounding Blvd Jean-Talon.

The old, preserved historic area of Longueuil, across the river, is also blessed with a collection of fine restaurants. Because it is a local secret the prices tend to be less than restaurants in Old Montréal.

Sushi: near Cathedral Church, it's called Na go Ya. Meal is about $30 but quite good.

Chinese foods: also near Cathedral in chinatown. Buffet about $15.

Some nice restaurants in St Catherine boulebard, there's also bars called Thursday, you will also find lots of restos around that area.

If you want to be treated like a queen, go to Queue de Cheval in st catherine. Meal around $50 or more.

There's a really nice restaurant next to the church on St. Catherine's St.; right upstairs from the Catherdar stop on the Metro. It's in a stone building that looks like its attached to the church complex.
